VS-432-Arch 2020-2

I would like welcome you to this course VS 432-Arch at Department of Visual Studies – Faculty of Architecture. The world of design – be it “architectural” or otherwise – is hampered by the ability of designers to express the purity of their ideas in a format others can envision as well. All too often, these ideas become fragmented, fractured, or otherwise mangled in the translation from the brain to any given medium. In the past, designers relied on the fluidity of their pens – their ability to draw, paint or model in the physical world – to express their ideas. With the addition of computer technology, we, as designers, have yet another tool to help us express our ideas.

During the course of 4 semesters, we will explore the power of computers and digital creation in the world of Design that will help you showcase your ideas – your designs. While it is quite impossible to cover every software program, every piece of hardware, and everything digital in between, this course attempts to expose the highlights of digital design through a series of demonstrations, lectures and exercises.

Semester Overview

In a glance, with SketchUp, you start off with simple tools that are familiar if you’ve ever used a computer to draw rectangles or circles. Then, to create 3D objects, you use specially designed tools. SketchUp lets you create models that are accurate down to a fraction of an inch. Also, using SketchUp’s component tools, you can minimize repetitive tasks and build complex models quickly. Following are a few task which we will explore during this semester:

  • Create models of simple shapes to forms to buildings, furniture, and other everyday objects.
  • Design models with interior and exterior details.
  • Quickly design architectural elements
  • Create reusable parts that you can use in other models.
  • Easily add colors and textures.
  • Create landscaping around buildings.
  • Add accurate shadow effects based on geographic location, time, and date.
  • Place models in a specific location on the Google Earth map.
  • Develop 3-D models from 2D photographs or drawings.
  • Produce walk-through animations.

During semester you will be graded for your quality of understanding based on your blog for work progress and assignment submissions including punctuality for 3 Nos. detailed assignments of 20 Marks each and 4 short class assignments of 10 Marks each. Late submissions will be downgraded.

Any form of Plagiarism / copy will NOT be tolerated.

Make sure you all have software installed and every hardware problem is resolved.

Questions can be asked directly via whatever means convenient.
